Cloud Robotics is a term from the fields of robotics, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things. It describes a new way for robots to work: they don't just use their own built-in technology, but access the enormous computing power and storage capacity of cloud services on the internet. This makes robots much more flexible, smarter, and cheaper, as they can effectively outsource and share their \u201eintelligence\u201c.<\/p>\n
Instead of each robot having to carry all programmes and data on board itself, it sends, for example, images or sensor data to a server in the cloud, receives the correct \u201eanswer\u201c there within seconds, and can act accordingly. This saves costs on hardware and also allows inexpensive robots to use state-of-the-art functions.<\/p>\n
A vivid example: Cleaning robots in large warehouses need to recognise obstacles and update current maps. These maps and new learning algorithms are stored centrally in the cloud. Each robot accesses them as soon as something new has been learned. This way, all robots simultaneously benefit from the knowledge of the entire robot swarm.
