Nature awareness in the Neflertal: Discover nature's secret heroes!

Spring is stirring in the Neflental. Fresh leaves are budding everywhere, and the wind carries the scent of violets through the air. Rosa Immergrün skips barefoot across the lush green fern meadows of Immergrün. The wind caresses the three-meter-tall eagle ferns, which rustle gently like a green sea. Small wooden houses with herb gardens on their roofs are hidden among the giant fern stalks, and goats and chickens bustle about everywhere in their enclosures.

The secret mission in Whispering Glade

On a particularly sunny morning, Rosa Periwinkle suddenly hears a faint buzzing. The sun's rays fall in narrow streaks through the tall fern leaves, casting bright patches on the ground. The buzzing grows louder. She follows the sound and discovers a narrow path behind a group of flowering fern stalks. It leads to the hidden violet clearing.

The violet clearing lies hidden, carpeted in purple violets and yellow crocuses. In the centre of the clearing stands an ancient statue of grey stone, its face overgrown with moss. The statue's eyes gleam as tiny sunbeams strike them like twinkling lights. Rosa Immergrün immediately feels: this place is very special.

The little heroes awaken

As Rosa Immergrün marvels at the beauty of the violet clearing, she notices the busy activity on the ground. Hundreds of tiny ants carry leaf fragments and flower petals. A fuzzy bumblebee buzzes over the carpet of violets. An earthworm quickly disappears into the damp soil. So many small creatures are at work here, ensuring that everything grows and thrives.

With wide eyes, Rosa Evergreen watches as a bee flies from flower to flower. It diligently collects nectar and helps to pollinate the flowers. The earthworm loosens the soil with its tunnels. The ants build their paths and help to break down fallen plant material. „They are the secret heroes of nature!“ exclaims Rosa Evergreen enthusiastically.

A discovery with friends

In the afternoon, Jojo, Lila, and Mosi, other gnomes from the village, walk across the meadows to Rosa Immergrün. Together they sit down amongst the fragrant violets. Sun, wind and the humming of insects surround them.

Rosa Immergrün shows the other gnome children the ant trails and the tiny burrows of the earthworms. They watch a bumblebee sunbathing. Mosi asks, „Why are they so important, even though they are so small?“ Lila thinks for a moment and then replies, „Imagine there were no more bees and no more earthworms. Then no violets or crocuses could grow. The meadows would no longer be so colourful and full of life.“

Everyone is thinking about what they can do to protect the little helpers. They carefully gather up any lying branches so that no one treads on the ant trail, and they leave the flowers so that the bees have enough to eat. Pink Periwinkle says, „We can be careful not to disturb nature. We can help the secret heroes by being kind and mindful towards them.“

The Promise of the Fern Meadows

In the evening, the violet glade glows with the colours of spring: violet, sunshine yellow, leaf green and pearl grey gleam in the last light. The statue in the centre seems to smile. Pink Evergreen and her friends place their hands on the cool moss and whisper a promise. They want to protect the secret heroes of nature, because without them the Neflental would lose its magic.

And so the children return to their rooftop herb gardens. The fern meadows rustle kindly in the evening wind. And deep in their hearts, everyone knows: Anyone can be a hero, if they look after nature and help its little inhabitants.

What do we learn from this?

Much of what happens in the Neflental is only possible because small and seemingly invisible creatures work together. Every bee, every ant, and every earthworm helps flowers to grow, grass to stay lush, and meadows to thrive. If we look closely and pay attention, we can discover secret heroes everywhere. Be observant, be kind to nature, and protect its little inhabitants – because the world needs you as a hero.
