Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) is a key term in drone technology, automation, and digital transformation. It describes flights of drones or unmanned aerial vehicles where the aircraft is outside the pilot's direct line of sight.
Normally, drone pilots have to keep their aircraft in sight at all times. However, thanks to Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS), drones can be used much further afield and with greater flexibility. This is particularly useful, for example, for inspecting power lines, pipelines, or for delivering packages to remote locations. The drone flies routes that are too long or complex to monitor with the naked eye.
BVLOS flights open up new opportunities for companies to work more efficiently and save costs – for example, because manned helicopters are no longer needed. However, special safety precautions and legal requirements must be observed to avoid collisions. A vivid example: an energy supplier uses BVLOS drones to inspect long high-voltage power lines for damage at high altitudes – a task that previously took days and can now be completed in a few hours with BVLOS.
